The Community Campus
The Community Campus, an initiative of the Foundation for Seacoast Health, is a center for health-related activities on the Seacoast. The Community Campus provides space, resources and leadership for non-profit organizations working to improve the health and wellness of the Seacoast community. Ten non-profit agencies are currently housed at the Campus, which is located off West Road in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Community Campus is an excellent location for events, conferences, meetings and workshops. With conference space, meeting rooms and full on-site catering facilities at the facility which is located on 94 acres of fields and woodlands off Route One in Portsmouth, the Campus can host day or evening events for groups from 4 to 400. The Community Campus does limit use of its Conference facilities to non-profit and educational institutions.
For information on Campus facilities or event planning, contact the Campus Administrative Coordinator at (603) 422-8200 or via email or go to the Community Campus Web Site.
Collaboration: A Core Strategy From the beginning, the Foundation has used its financial resources to encourage cooperation, communication and resource sharing among the Seacoast's healthcare, education and human service providers. With the development of the Community Campus, the Foundation embarked on a bold experiment in collaboration. The road that led to this collaborative adventure of designing, building, and sharing space with grantees was long and winding. Being under one roof gives programs the opportunity to address the inefficiencies of providing health, educational, and social services to many of the same children and families at different sites.
Seven years later, the Community Campus joint initiative is functioning as envisioned: a closely-knit collaborative community boasting a broad array of services for more than 3,500 children and their families. The synergy of having a continuum of services available under one roof is paying off. Teen participants from the New Heights Teen Adventure program are guest readers in the Community Child Care Center. Parents whose children receive primary and preventive care at the Families First Health and Support Center often attend GED or ESL classes through the Community Action Program.
Headstart, Portsmouth Early Education Program of the public schools, and the childcare center created a collaborative Community school that shares resources and personnel. The Child Advocacy Center, a first of its kind in NH, addresses the issue of abused children and is a model for the others being created throughout the State. The prescription assistance program of InfoLink collaborates with Portsmouth Hospital to provide support and to connect qualifying folks within and outside of the Campus Community to pharmaceutical free prescription programs.
Executive Directors and staff from all ten independent programs at the Community Campus meet monthly to discuss common issues, to plan additional collaborative events, and to share resources and education trainings. Collaboration done well can create a community within a community that provides a seamless system of services for children and families.
